Washing and care tips for swimwear

There are lots of substances that can be quite harsh on the delicate materials such as suncreams, chlorine, salt water and not forgetting sunlight. When it comes to washing your swimwear it should be thoroughly cleaned but on a gentle cycle.

Always wash your swimwear after you have been swimming

If you have spent your day at the pool or beach, you should rinse your swimwear with clean water immediately after wearing it. In addition, you can hand wash your swimming trunks or bikinis with a gentle care shampoo.

After about three or four days, you should wash your swimwear in the washing machine:

  • It is best to wash your swimwear on a gentle cycle. This will help to prevent any damage to the delicate materials.

  • It is recommended not to use a spin cycle or you should choose a very low spin speed instead such as 400 to 600.

  • Wash at a maximum temperature of 30 or 40 degrees.

  • It is best to use a mild laundry detergent or a special laundry detergent for delicate materials.

  • Do not use any fabric softener, as it attacks the fibres and can damage the material over time.

  • It is best to put your swimwear in a net washing bag. This will protect your swimwear from looking old and worn and it will also protect the delicate material.

Tip

You will need to apply suncream with a high SPF when going swimming or sunbathing. In addition to a parasol or protective headwear, it is recommended to reapply suncream after you have been swimming. Sometimes suncream can leave stains on swimwear or attack the material. Therefore, you should let your suncream soak in before putting on your swimwear.

How to dry swimwear

By drying your swimwear correctly you can make it longer lasting. Follow the helpful tips below to help prevent the colours on your swimwear from fading or looking worn:

  • Don't wring out your swimwear, instead gently squeeze any excess moisture out of the fibres. You can also use a bath towel to help soak up some of the excess moisture.

  • Afterwards, hang up your swimwear on a clothes horse in the shade to dry.

  • Do not hang up any type of swimwear when it is wet as it can become stretched.

  • To prevent any fading do not leave your swimwear to dry in direct sunlight.

  • Do not put your swimwear in the tumble dryer. The high temperatures damage the elastic fibres and there is a risk of shrinkage.
