Tips for playing darts: tips for beginners, rules for playing darts & equipment

Darts is more than just after-work entertainment. It is a hobby that combines skill, strategy and concentration. Whether you're a beginner or advanced player, or whether you play at home or in a club, darts can help you relax but it can also be fun and exciting. This makes darts an ideal hobby and a good way to improve your work-life balance. We'll show you how to get started playing darts, briefly explain the rules and list the necessary equipment that you will need to get started with your new hobby.

Rules for playing darts: an overview

Darts is a game of skill in which small, sharp arrows, known as “darts”, are thrown at a round target called a “dartboard”. The aim is to hit certain fields on the target as precisely as possible, which have different scores.

The dartboard consists of 20 evenly divided fields, numbered from 1 to 20, and a “bullseye” in the middle. The fields are divided into different zones: the single zones, the double zones, the triple zones and the bullseye, which consists of an outer circle (25 points) and an inner circle (50 points).

When playing darts, a player has a go at throwing three darts at the dartboard. They get points for each hit, depending on which zone they hit. At the end of every round, each player adds their points and the score determines who wins the round. In most darts games, the aim is to get from a certain number of points (often 501 or 301) down to zero. Therefore, players have to think, calculate and develop a strategy to get to zero in the end. To win the game, a player must end with a hit in a double field. Every throw counts and could decide the game, making darts a game that requires not only a good strategy but also nerves of steel.

Different dart games: an overview

There are different types of dart games which gives players a choice of variety and challenges. Here are some of the most common types of dart games:

  • 301/501: the classic darts game in which each player starts with 301 or 501 points and must play down to exactly zero. The last hit must be on a double field. This variation is often played in competitions.

  • Cricket/Tactics: in Cricket (or Tactics), the numbers 15 to 20 and the bullseye must be hit three times. Once a player has hit all the required squares, he can collect points with additional hits until his opponent has also “closed” his squares.

  • Around the Clock/Board: a simple yet challenging darts variation in which players have to hit the numbers from 1 to 20 in ascending order. The first player to hit all the numbers in sequence wins.

  • Shanghai: a specific number must be hit in each round (for example, round 1: only 1, round 2: only 2, etc.). A player gets a “Shanghai” when he or she hits a single, double and tripleof the same number in one round. If this happens, the player wins immediately.

Dart equipment for beginners

You don't need extensive equipment to start playing darts. A few darts and a dartboard are all you’ll need. However, it is important to choose the right equipment if you want to have fun and make progress right from the start:

  • Dartboard: when it comes to a dartboard, you can decide whether you want a conventional sisal dartboard or an e-dartboard. Normal dartboards are usually cheaper and last longer if they are good quality, but they will need to be replaced after a while. In addition, it is easier to see how your darts stick to the dartboard which will help you work on your throwing technique. On the other hand, if you use e-darts, the dartboard does the math for you, so you don’t need to do any calculations in your head. However, e-dartboards can be quite loud and the darts get stuck in the board quite often, regardless of your throwing technique.

    • The board should be hung at 1.73 meters height (bullseye). If you play with steel tip darts, the launch line (oche) should be 2.37 meters away from the board and for soft tip darts it should be 2.44 meters away. Make sure that the segment with the “20” is aligned to 12 o'clock.

  • Darts for beginners: for conventional dartboards, you should use steel tip darts, whereas soft tip darts are used for e-dartboards. Steel tip darts have a metal tip and weigh up to 50 grams, while soft tip darts have plastic tips and are much lighter (approx. 21 grams). Darts with a total weight of between 22 and 24 grams are ideal for beginners.

  • Barrels (tip of the arrow): a brass barrel is sufficient for beginners. Cylindrical barrels are great for players with a stronger throw, while teardrop-shaped barrels are a good option for beginners with a weaker throw.

  • Flight (feather at the end): standard flights give your dart stability and are the best choice for beginners. They ensure that the dart flies evenly and minimises your error rate.

Tip

For beginners, it is a good idea to protect the wall around the dartboard with a foam ring (called a “surround”). On floors that are easily damaged, such as laminate or parquet, a hard rubber mat is also recommendable. The mat will catch any falling darts and will protect the floor from getting damaged.

How to play darts: tips for beginners

If you are a beginner and quickly want to get better at darts, it is important to practice systematically and with a specific task in mind. Here are some essential tips to help you improve your dart skills quickly:

  • Patience when warming up: when you are warming up and at the beginning of a game of darts, it is normal for your throws to be less accurate. Your hand-eye coordination needs time to adjust to darts. Especially as a beginner, this warm-up phase can take from 20 to 30 minutes. As you become more skilled, it will take less time to warm up. However, you should give yourself plenty of time to warm up at the beginning.

  • Set goals: instead of randomly throwing darts at the dartboard, you should set yourself specific tasks. Start by practicing the triple 20 and then work your way through the doubles. These target exercises will help you develop precision and hit specific fields with confidence.

  • Maintain a stable stance: a stable stance is essential if you want to achieve consistency in your throws. To practice this, stand behind the launch line. Check which hand you throw with and then on the same side, place your foot at a slight angle towards the line so that your toes touch it. The other foot should also be turned slightly inwards towards the line to give you stability. Experiment with your stance and play with leaning forward until you find a stance that feels good. Make sure that you always use the same stance. This will help you get consistent results.

  • Finding your rhythm: here, consistency is the key. Find your personal rhythm and stick with it every time you throw. Work on maintaining your flow and precision throughout your entire practice.

  • Pay attention to your centre of gravity: always place your fingers on the same place on your dart. Pay attention to where the centre of gravity is in your dart. Hold the dart by the barrel. This ensures that it stays stable and does not tilt up or down too much in flight. If the dart is pointing upwards in the board, adjust your grip by holding it slightly lower.

  • Maintain concentration: during a game, your focus should always stay on the target. Don't look away between throws. Take the next dart blindly from your hand without taking your eyes off the target to maintain your concentration.

  • Observe techniques: watch how professionals play to get an idea of different playing styles and throwing techniques. Try them out and find out what works best for you. Be self-critical and analyse your own technique regularly. This is the best way to improve on your weak spots.

  • Don’t give up: nobody becomes a darts pro overnight. Regular training, perseverance and patience are essential to getting better. Set realistic goals for yourself and don’t give up even when you have setbacks. Over time, your dedication will pay off.

These tips will give you a solid foundation to improve your darts skills and become a good darts player over time.
