C&A backs action plan to support garment workers
C&A joins leading fashion brands, trade unions and employer’s organization to support industry’s most vulnerable
Dusseldorf, 23 April 2020 – C&A has endorsed a global multi-stakeholder action plan to help garment manufacturers and workers in developing economies survive the disruption to global trade caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The agreement reached by the International Labour Organization, the International Organization of Employers (IOE), the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) and IndustriALL Global Union calls on major fashion brands, retailers and governments to commit to measures that protect the income, health and employment of garment workers during the COVID-19 crisis.
C&A along with other fashion brands and retailers is calling on governments and financial institutions to speed up access to credit and income support for businesses and workers.
Under the action plan, C&A is also committing to provide effective, open lines of communication with supply chain partners about the status of business operations and future planning of orders based on how the current crisis evolves.
C&A to date 93% orders reinstated
In response to the government ordered closure of all of its 1,400 stores across Europe, C&A was initially forced to pause all orders. The fashion retailer has since reached out to its over 300 suppliers to find mutually beneficial solutions. C&A has to date reinstated 93% of all previously paused orders.
“Beyond the immediate measures to address the impact of the crisis C&A remains committed to the long-term establishment and strengthening of sustainable systems of social protection for a more just and resilient garment industry in countries that lack such structures”, said Jeffrey Hogue, C&A’s Chief Sustainability Officer.
