C&A phases out single-use plastic bags across Europe
New ‘bag-for-life’ can be exchanged for a new one free of charge

- Alternatives offered in form of recycled PET ‘bag-for-life’ and recycled paper bags
- C&A replaces worn out recycled PET bags free of charge
Dusseldorf, 14 February 2020 – C&A is phasing out the sale of single-use plastic bags in all of its more than 1,400 stores across 18 countries in Europe. As of March 2020, the fashion retailer will introduce the durable ‘bag-for-life’, made of 80% recycled PET which will withstand many shopping trips. When worn out, it can be returned to any C&A store and exchanged for a new one free of charge.
“We want to offer our customers more sustainable options and encourage the habit of reusing and recycling. As with our clothing, the longer these bags are used the more eco-friendly they become. This move will further reduce greenhouse gas emissions and plastic consumption,” said Michael Reidick, C&A’s Head of Sustainability for Europe.
C&A is also offering customers the choice of 100% recycled paper bags. These are made of unbleached brown paper, saving water and energy that would otherwise be needed for the bleaching process. In addition to Paper and PET, C&A continues to offer other alternatives, such as cotton bags.
C&A is continuously investigating its plastic usage, e.g. within the transportation process and product packaging aiming to reduce its overall plastic usage. “Eliminating single-use plastic bags in our European stores is an important milestone within C&A’s wider commitment to cut emissions, source more sustainable materials and design products with their next use in mind,” said Reidick.
